As of April 9, 2022, Tier 5 and 6 members only need five years of service credit to be vested.

Hi. I have been trying for a number of weeks, waiting more than an hour on the telephone, using secure contact form with no success. I’ve left messages. I’ve had the robot state that call volume is too busy and disconnect. I’ve emailed. I’ve used the secure contact form. I’ve called a few weeks later. None of my questions can be answered by retirement online. I’ve sent several questions through the secure contact form with no answer-the latest was two weeks ago. I truly don’t know what to do. Now, my question list has grown. Can I please make an appointment with someone to call?

Thank you for your quick response. I am referring into particular to the adjustments. I have contacted the agency I previously work for in 2020 . They have indicated that all the necessary documentation has been forwarded to the office of state comptrollers office.
I have contacted your office a number of times they have indicated to me that the matter is in the recalculation unit.
The individuals in the office are extremely helpful, but they are unable to provide a timeframe as to when the re-calculation unit would be able to finalize my pension.
This also affects individuals who are approaching Medicare eligibility with a windfall of backpay from their pensions, would be penalized by increase their Medicare premiums through no fault of their own.
Previously finalizations of pensions took three months prior to the pandemic, waiting in upwards of 2 1/2 years is not what I considered to be timely
I would ask that you please look into this matter for me
    Thank you

Want to view my retirement information online. However, I am required to be at my HOME PHONE to get online. Problem is, I must wait for the call during weekday working hours, when I am also working. So, since I cannot be at my home phone during the 9-5 M-F work hours of whatever office handles this, I can never get onto my online account. I called about it and was pretty much told “too bad.”

My wife retired in September of 2019 and I retired in October of 2019 we are still waiting for our pensions to be finalized or for the re-calculation to take place. You may have a bit longer to wait!

Can someone please explain what is used to determine the calculation for pension payment and what does the recalualation dept. do. What would be the reasons for the recalculation? does my pension payment that started last February,2022 take into account my sick leave credit and accumulated vacation pay.

When you retire, your pension payment is based on the salary and service information we have on file for you at retirement. In some cases, slight adjustments are made to the initial amount after we receive and process final payroll information (such as your sick leave and vacation pay) from your employer. These recalculations are processed in date order and are generally minimal compared to the overall benefit amount.

Once we have all the information we need and we finalize your benefit amount, if your payment increases, you will receive a retroactive payment for the amount you are owed back to your date of retirement.

To find out whether your pension is being recalculated, please message our customer service representatives using our secure contact form. Filling out the secure form allows them to safely contact you about your personal account information.

Well I guess that answers why I don’t have a statement online, since I retired on December 22. Since I got my first pension check at the end of January 2023, that means I won’t get my first retiree statement until next year (2024), right?

I was curious about how member contributions were handled once we retired. I know they don’t impact the pension amount we get, but I was assuming they must be “worked off” somehow. Like the amount being divided over the number of months we’re expected to live, or something like that.

And what happens if someone dies before the amount is worked off? Would the remainder be paid to our beneficiary along with any death benefit?

Correct, you will receive your first Retiree Annual Statement in 2024.

In the meantime, you can view a “pay stub” of your pension benefit in Retirement Online. Your paystub provides you with valuable insight into your monthly benefit and deduction amounts, and you’ll be able to track year-to-date totals for your benefit amount and any deductions made.

To look up your pay stub, sign in to your Retirement Online account. From the top of your Account Homepage, in the ‘I want to’ section, click the “View Pension Check” link.

NYSLRS pensions are defined benefits, which means your pension amount is a lifetime pension based on your years of service and earnings. Member contributions support the benefits earned by current and future retirees. For more information, visit our Defined Benefit Plan page.

Please note :The update information section is a little inaccurate, they are still finalizing individuals pensions who retired 3 years ago and status is not reflective on the site. Upon calling the retirement system to inquire about the status of the finalization of your pension you are are told it is in the recalculation department.
When asking if you can speak to someone in that department you are told the department doesn’t take phone calls and they have no timeframe as to when retirees will have their pensions finalized. Then you are told they will notify the unit……..6 months later Same response, this really needs to be addressed.
Prior to the pandemic finalization was usually 3-4 months.

Virtually all initial pension payments are made timely by the end of the month following retirement. These payments are closer than ever to a retiree’s final calculation. NYSLRS often receives adjustments to earnings for retirees well after the date of retirement and is working hard to recalculate pension amounts and provide retroactive payments as quickly as possible. We apologize for the length of time this has taken for some retirees. Thank you for your patience.
