Retirees: Update Your Contact Information

Wherever retirement takes you, it’s important to keep NYSLRS informed of any changes to your contact information. That way, you’ll be sure to receive the tax information, news, correspondence and statements we send you. For example, we’ll be distributing 1099-R tax forms in January and Retiree Annual Statements in February.

If you choose to receive these documents by mail, it’s vital you review the address we have on file for you. If your information is incorrect or outdated, you must update your address by December 31. You can get access to your 1099-R and Statement sooner than printed copies are mailed by choosing email as your delivery preference—learn how to get email notifications for important documents below.

Please be aware, changing your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS) does not mean your records will automatically be updated with NYSLRS. Also, USPS will only forward mail to your new address for a limited time—generally, 12 months. To ensure you continue receiving mail from NYSLRS, you must submit a change of address directly to us. This is especially important if you receive your pension payment as a paper check.

Also, if you don’t already have an email address on file, please provide it so we can contact you quickly with important information, such as a change to your benefits.

NYSLRS pensions are calculated using a preset formula based on your earnings and years of service—where you live isn’t a factor.

However, in New York State, NYSLRS pensions are not subject to state or local income tax. If you permanently moved to another state or if you spend more than 183 days in that state, your pension may be subject to state or local income taxes.

For general information about which states tax pensions, visit the Retired Public Employees Association’s NYS Pension Taxation Requirements By State page. For questions specific to your situation, consult a tax advisor or contact the state’s tax or revenue agency.

We mail printed 1099-Rs by January 31. However, we make 1099-Rs available in Retirement Online sooner than printed copies are mailed.

If you have updated your delivery preferences to receive your 1099-R tax form electronically, you’ll receive your email notification when they’re available. We’ll also post here to let people know they can sign in to Retirement Online to view their forms.

Retirement Online is the fastest and most convenient way to update your direct deposit information. Your changes will generally be applied to your next month’s pension payment.

      • Sign in to Retirement Online.
      • From Account Homepage, click Update Direct Deposit.
      • Follow steps to update your bank account number and routing number.

If you don’t have a Retirement Online account, you can complete an Electronic Funds Transfer Direct Deposit Enrollment Application (RS6370) and submit it using our secure contact form or by mail. Please note, using a paper form will take longer for the information to reach us, and it may take up to 60 days to apply your changes. Be sure to attach a voided check or have a bank representative complete section three of the form.

I am a NYS retiree and have changed my address in the retirement system, but I am still receiving my dental coverage information at my old address. Anthem is telling me to change the address with the employer. What else do I need to do to have Anthem mail things directly to my new address?

It’s important to keep your contact information up to date with NYSLRS. However, NYSLRS doesn’t administer health insurance programs for its retirees.

For New York State retirees and some municipal retirees, the New York State Department of Civil Service administers the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP). You can find contact information for the Department of Civil Service at https://www.cs.ny.gov/home/contact.cfm.

If you retired from a public employer that does not participate in NYSHIP, your former employer’s benefits administrator should be able to help you.

I work in a Skilled Nursing Facility and a resident who moved here has no POA and a certificate of incapacity so she cannot sign for herself. I used the contact form to ask for help on July 2 and have gotten no answer as of August 8. Our facility is her Representative Payee for SSA.
How can I get her address changed for her pension?

    Dear NYSLRS
I noticed in the section called Annual Retiree Statement it says:
“However, we can deduct retiree premiums from pension payments at your former employer’s request. If you have questions about health insurance coverage and you retired from a New York State agency, contact the New York State Department of Civil Service. If you retired from a public employer other than New York State (a county, city, town, village or school district), please contact your former employer’s benefits administrator. If health insurance is not deducted from your benefit, this amount will be $0.00.”

Is this potential deduction for NYSHIP health insurance from our pension a pre-tax or a post-tax deduction ?
    Thank you

We’re sorry; we can’t securely send your 1099-R tax form as an email attachment.

Retirement Online is the only way we can electronically deliver sensitive documents. Retirees with “email” as their delivery preference simply receive an email notification when they can sign in to view their documents.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, Retirement Online is not accessible to customers outside of the United States and Canada.
