Retirees: Your 1099-R is Available Online

Retirees: Your 1099-R is Available OnlineTax season is approaching, and with 1099-Rs available online, getting this key NYSLRS tax form is now faster and more convenient than ever.

Most NYSLRS pensions are subject to federal income tax (some disability benefits are not taxable). If you receive taxable income from NYSLRS, we provide a 1099-R tax form for filing your taxes. New this year, retirees who opted to go paperless received an email notifying them their 1099-R is available in their Retirement Online account. If you did not change your delivery preference to email, your 1099-R tax form will be mailed to you by January 31.

Understanding Your 1099-R

A 1099-R tax form is used to report the distribution of taxable retirement benefits. It shows:

  • The total benefit paid to you in a calendar year.
  • The taxable amount of your benefit.
  • The amount of taxes withheld from your benefit.

If you have questions about the information on the form, check our interactive 1099-R tutorial. It walks you through a sample 1099-R and offers a short explanation of each box on the form.

Changing Your Federal Withholding

After you file your taxes, you may find that you need to adjust the federal taxes that are being withheld from your pension.

Retirement Online is the fast and convenient way to change your withholding information. You can also check your current withholding by signing in to Retirement Online and viewing your most recent pension pay stub. Visit our Taxes and Your Pension page for more information.

Note: New York State doesn’t tax your NYSLRS pension, and we can’t withhold income tax for other states.

My 1099-R shows a slightly different taxable amount than my aggregate from December’s pay-stub. The 1099 shows what would be true based on the changes for 2024.

Yes, some retirees may see a small difference between the non-taxable amount listed on their 1099-R tax form and the year-to-date total provided on their December pay stub. The amount reported in your 1099-R tax form is correct.

NYSLRS doesn’t administer health insurance programs. We recommend that you reach out to your benefits administrator for documents about your health insurance.

I am a NYS retiree. My husband and I were both NYS employees. He is deceased but I receive his pension as well as my own. I have received my 1099 in the mail and can access it online. However, I am unable to see his 1099 which I need for my taxes nor have I received it in the mail. I have tried numerous times on your website & nada, only mine shows up. I would like to file my taxes. Please advise.

I’ve tried Apple & Microsoft to login, but neither works. Hopefully I’ll be getting the paper 1099 in the mail.

Tax years before 2023 are not available in Retirement Online.

Reprints of previous year’s 1099-R forms are generally available in early to mid-February. We will update our Taxes and Your Pension webpage  with information on how to request a reprint once they become available.

Maybe I’m missing something, but the 1099 for my pension is good except there is nothing about the monies I received from ex in DRO. How do I print that?

How can I change my 1099 status to get it via email, if due to the fact that I live overseas, I am locked out of my retirement online? It certainly would arrive to me much more quickly than by postal mail.

I can attest to the persistent problems logging to my retirement online account. It took a few shaming tweets before the matter was resolved. Good luck trying to find your 1099R once you’re online. Last time I checked, there’s no special notation link to the form. I believe we deserve better than this as retirees.

    NYSLRS,
I received my 1099-R but it only included Copy B and Copy C, but did not include “Copy 2” that I need to file with Massachusetts. How do I obtain this document.
    Thank you.

Most NYSLRS pensions are subject to federal income tax (some disability benefits are not taxable).

This week, NYSLRS mailed 1099-R tax forms to retirees who receive a taxable benefit and choose to receive their form by mail. Those who choose to receive their 1099-R electronically can find it in their Retirement Online account.

If you belong to a New York City retirement system, you should contact that system if you have not received your 1099-R.

I have made multiple attempts to locate my 1099 form and this website through my cell phone, as I only have a wireless printer. Could you please advise me as to where I can locate this form? It keeps logging me out. I’m getting very frustrated, I’m sorry.
